The Governor of Lagos state, Akinwumi Ambode has praised the effort of President Buhari in declaring June 12 as the new democracy day.
Buhari yesterday declared that May 29th will no longer be regarded as democracy day because his administration has bent to demands from many Nigerians for the celebration to be shifted to June 12 in honor of late MKO Abiola, winner of the June 12 annulled election.
“Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.
“We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola.
In a statement released by Chief Press Secretary to the governor of Lagos state, Habib Aruna, Governor Ambode said President Buhari has done what previous administrations have failed to do.
“This is a welcome development. It is a historic moment in our nation, and I join other Nigerians to commend President Buhari on this announcement. By this move, he has done what previous administrations failed to do.
This not only shows that the president is a man of history and character but also eloquently confirms that the heroes of democracy did not die in vain after all,” Ambode said.
