EURO 2022: England beat Northern Ireland as Lionesses finish group stage in style

England

England, who had already secured a spot in the quarterfinals, easily defeated Northern Ireland to cap off an impressive group stage at Euro 2022.

The Lionesses, who finish first in Group A, will advance to the round of eight without giving up a goal and with three victories out of three games.

Beth Mead, who had already scored five goals in the tournament, added two more, and Alessia Russo, a substitute, scored two goals in quick succession after the break.

In their first major women’s tournament, Northern Ireland finishes last in their group without a victory.

Although there wasn’t much at stake in the home nations match, England was the overwhelming favourite and was expected to prove it in Southampton.

At St. Mary’s Stadium, England’s manager Sarina Wiegman was not present because she tested positive for Covid on Friday. England struggled at first but soon established their calibre.

Fran Kirby of Chelsea performed a feat of magic to put Chelsea ahead when she skillfully curled the ball into the top corner, and Mead skillfully drilled in a low shot to make it 2-0 before halftime.

Although Kenny Shiels’ team has a lot to learn from this tournament, their supporters were in a festive mood as they cheered, beat drums, and stood for nearly the entire final match at Euro 2022.

England improved their reputation as a team few will want to face en route to the final, and they now await a quarterfinal matchup against either Spain or Denmark on next Wednesday.
