Yann Sommer, a goalkeeper from Switzerland, could be acquired by Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.
Sommer, who currently plays for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga, will turn 34 later this month, and United are discussing a possible transfer. Sommer can sign a new contract with another club in January, within the last six months of his current one.
Sommer has sparked interest since last summer, when he was viewed as a backup option to a first-choice goalkeeper.
United and manager Erik ten Hag have made David de Gea the club’s first choice for the duration of the season, despite the fact that the Spaniard is out of contract next summer.
Doubts about De Gea’s position in the team have been brewing for several months, particularly since Ten Hag took over at Old Trafford, and he remains one of the club’s highest-paid players. Even though United has the option to extend De Gea’s contract for another year, it is unlikely that he will stay on his current terms.
The two parties are currently negotiating the next step, though there are some indications that a departure may be on the cards next summer. Even if De Gea does leave United, it is hoped that the split will be mutual and amicable after 12 years in the northwest.
United have been tracking Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa for several months, scouting him several times this season.
Regardless of the decision on De Gea and a new first choice, United must consider other new arrivals in goal, as current back-up Martin Dubravka is expected to return to parent club Newcastle at the end of the season when his loan expires. A decision must also be made on Dean Henderson, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.
Henderson, according to reports, does not want to return to United after his loan spell with Forest, despite the fact that there is no buy option in his loan agreement. United are hoping that his time in Nottingham will pique the interest of potential buyers.
