Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez of Argentina acknowledges that his team had to endure hardships in order to defeat France in the World Cup final on Sunday.
Martinez played a key role in Argentina’s victory by preventing France from taking advantage of a great opportunity to tie the game after extra time, resulting in a 3-3 result. In the ensuing shootout, he continued to make a save as his team emerged victorious. The Aston Villa goalkeeper was overcome with emotion after La Albiceleste won their third world cup title and first since 1986.
Emiliano Martinez comment
“We suffered a lot. We thought we were in control but they managed to come back,” Martinez told Television Publica. “It was a very complicated game. Our destiny was to suffer. They had one last chance to win, luckily I was able to stop it with my foot. It’s a moment I’ve always dreamed of living, I have no words for it. I left very young for England and I would like to dedicate this victory to my family.”
Martinez was a crucial member of the Argentina team throughout the competition, and his efforts were recognized when he was given the Golden Glove award.
The goalkeeper will return to Aston Villa to play in their home Premier League match against Liverpool on December 26 after celebrating his international success.
