Former Ivory Coast captain, Didier Drogba, has hailed Nigeria’s duo of Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala for winning the 2023 CAF men’s and women’s Player of the Year award.
Osimhen became the first Super Eagles player to win the prize since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.
The Napoli frontman is also the fifth Super Eagles player after the late Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amuneke, Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba to win the award.
For Oshoala, it is a record-extending sixth CAF women’s Player of the Year.
Drogba, a winner of the CAF men’s Player of the Year in 2006 and 2009 wrote on X:“Long live the new King and Queen of Africa @victorosimhen9, @asisat_oshoala @caf_online. Congratulations my Nigerian People, we are waiting for you in January.”
In other categories, Chiamaka Nnadozie won the award for Best Goalkeeper and Nigeria was named Best Women’s National Team.
