Michael Ihiekwe, a Liverpool academy product of Nigerian descent, has been signed by EFL League One club Sheffield Wednesday, according to their official website.
After his contract with Championship newcomers Rotherham United expires on July 1, Ihiekwe will finalize his transfer to the Owls.
After declining a new contract at the AESSEAL New York Stadium team, the 29-year-old is expected to sign with Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent.
Ihiekwe helped Rotherham United gain promotion to the second tier during a successful season there, and this summer he was selected for the PFA League One Team of the Year.
After participating in 184 games over five seasons, scoring 14 goals, and recording 11 assists, he is leaving Rotherham United.
The central defender’s resume lists previous affiliations with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cheltenham Town, Tranmere Rovers, and Accrington Stanley.
At Sheffield Wednesday, Ihiekwe teams up with ex-Nigeria U23 invitee Domnic Iorfa, ex-Flying Eagles invitee Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and ex-Everton midfielder Dennis Adeniran.
