Gerald Darmanin, the French interior minister, has been called on to resign after Liverpool supporters accused him of lying about the mayhem that marred the Champions League final at the Stade de France.
Ted Morris, the head of the Liverpool Disabled Supporters Association, testified before the French Senate on Tuesday in the afternoon and painted a terrifying picture of what happened outside the Paris stadium in the hours leading up to the team’s 1-0 loss to Real Madrid on May 28.
Morris targeted Darmanin in particular because he had initially attributed the frightening scenes to fans trying to enter the stadium with fake tickets.
He said: “With my wife, we love France and Paris, but you, Mr Darmanin, you lied and I ask you to withdraw your accusation. And if you have the decency to do so, I hope you have the decency to resign.”
Morris was one of the Liverpool supporters who was tear-gassed; another was an autistic eight-year-old boy who got separated from his father and was later attacked after they were reunited; a third was a wheelchair user who was helped over locked gates by other supporters as she attempted to flee the chaos.
