Former Real Madrid star Marcelo has tweeted a sincere apology after breaking an opponent’s leg.
The Brazilian, who now plays for Fluminense, was sent off and seen in tears as he left the pitch after the freak accident.
The left knee of Argentinos Juniors defender Luciano Sanchez appeared to dislocate after Marcelo came into contact with his shin, with his entire leg buckling and bending underneath him.
“Today I had a very difficult moment on the pitch,” Marcelo wrote on Twitter [or X, whatever].
“I unintentionally injured a fellow player. I want to wish him the best possible recovery. All the strength in the world.”
A statement added, “Fluminense FC expresses its solidarity and wishes a speedy recovery to Argentinos Juniors defender Luciano Sanchez, who was injured in an accidental move in tonight’s match”, while Argentinos Juniors said, “We are rivals, not enemies”.
Here’s a clip of the incident, but beware, it’s not one to watch over your morning bowl of Coco Pops…
