England defeated Luxembourg 10-0 on Tuesday night to finish their World Cup qualifying campaign with a perfect record and without giving up a goal.
Following their resounding victory at the Bet365 Stadium, the Lionesses’ qualifying record now reads played 10, won 10, goals for 80, and goals against 0 for the tournament.
England took the lead after 11 minutes when Alessia Russo was tripped on the spin by Catherine Have. Georgia Stanway’s subsequent penalty kick found the bottom corner. It was two after seven minutes, with Russo approving Leah Williamson’s bubbly delivery.
Before the hour mark, Stanway added her second goal and England’s third, scoring through Lucie Schlimé’s legs to put the finishing touches on a well-executed team move.
Before the half ended, Rachel Daly joined the fun by returning home after a brief corner routine. A minute later, England scored its fifth goal. Mead evaded two Luxembourg challenges and slammed into the net in another fantastic team move.
Within three minutes of entering the game in the second half, Beth England scored by converting Mead’s accurate cross.
Just before the hour mark, Parris added a seventh goal, confidently finding the bottom corner after being set up by Toone. After Parris was brought down in the area 18 minutes from the end, Toone deservedly put herself on the scoresheet to cap an excellent performance. The Manchester United midfielder calmly converted the ensuing penalty kick.
The focus is now on Wembley, where Sarina Wiegman’s European Champions will host the eagerly anticipated World Champions USA in October.
