Tonight, the 66th Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 19:30, however, the ranking reveal has already started on France Football’s official Twitter account.
Some of the world’s best players will receive a plethora of honors, most notably the Ballon d’Or. The Kopa Trophy, which is awarded to the best player under the age of 21, and the Yashin Trophy, which is given to the best goalkeeper, will also be announced by France Football.
The award will be given out for the first time ever based on performances over a season, rather than over a calendar year, as this year’s ceremony has been moved due to the upcoming World Cup. Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is the favorite to win the men’s prize, while Barcelona playmaker Alexia Putellas is expected to win a second consecutive Ballon d’Or Féminin.
Despite finishing 20th in the vote, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was nominated for the 18th consecutive season, is still better than longtime rival Lionel Messi, who was completely left off the 30-player shortlist.
