Eight die after boat capsizes in Ghana

Officials confirmed that eight schoolchildren in Ghana’s Bono East Region died when the boat transporting them to school capsized on the Volta Lake.

According to National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the group of eight students—five boys and three girls, ages five to twelve—were among 20 students travelling to school in the community of Wayokope, which is located across the lake.

Ibrahim Wudonyim, the coordinator of NADMO, said the Marine Police Unit of Ghana Police Service, assisted by some locals, have recovered the bodies of the deceased.

Investigations are underway to find out the cause of the accident. (Xinhua/NAN)
