Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has been named Boomplay Nigeria’s most streamed male artist for 2022.
Following a similar disclosure by Spotify Nigeria, whose year-end report similarly found that the singer ended 2022 as the nation’s most streamed artist, the digital service provider made the announcement via its Recap report.
The Grammy winner is followed on Boomplay by Asake and Kizz Daniel. The numbers show a 248% surge in streaming on Boomplay for the year, supported by the platform’s 88 million monthly active users and catalog of more than 90 million songs.
The group is also included on Boomplay Nigeria’s list of the Top Streamed Albums of 2022. The leader of the group is Burna Boy’s sixth album, Love Damini. Asake‘s genre-defying debut, Mr Money with the Vibe, which was released to immediate critical and commercial acclaim, and Kizz Daniel’s Barnabas, which assisted the artist in surpassing 300 million streams on Audiomack and Boomplay in July, round out the top five.
Additionally, the Most Streamed Songs of 2022 list includes songs by Asake and Kizz Daniel. The former won the category with “Buga,” while Fireboy finished in third with “Bandana,” featuring Asake. The No. 2 song was “Overloading (Overdose),” which was performed by Crayon, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Magixx, and Boy Spyce.
The most streamed female musicians in 2022 were Ayra Starr, Mercy Chinwo, and Simi, while Asake, Young Jonn, and Lade were featured in the Top Booming category, which highlights the year’s fastest-rising performers.
Boomplay claims that by profiling and segmenting music data by country, artists, and consumers, it offers an accurate portrait of music consumption throughout Africa.
