James Norman Mattis was born in Pullman, Washington, on September 8, 1950, to his parents John West Mattis and Lucille (Proulx) Mattis. His father was a merchant mariner, and his mother worked in Army Intelligence in South Africa at the time of the Second World War. Later, his father shifted to Richland, Washington, to work in a nuclear plant.
Mattis completed his schooling at Richland High School in the year 1968. He attended Central Washington University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1971. He also got his Master of Arts in international security affairs from the National Defense University in the year 1994.

James Mattis started his career at the age of 18 when he was enlisted in the Marine Corps in the year 1969. Three years later, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant by the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. After the Persian Gulf War, Mattis was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He led the 1st Battalion, and 7th Marines during the combat operations against Saddam Hussein for the liberation of Kuwait.
