James “Buster” Douglas is the son of William “Dynamite” Douglas and Lula Pearl. He was born on 7 April 1960, in Columbus, Ohio. He spent his childhood in Windsor Terrace, Columbus.
He went to Linden McKinley High School and was active in basketball and football. Following that, he played basketball for Coffeyville, Kansas’s Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens. He has also played for Sinclair Community College. Later, Douglas received a basketball scholarship to attend Mercyhurst University.
In 1987, Buster Douglas married Bertha M. Paige. They are the parents of three sons named Arthur, Kevin, and Cardae. He also has another son named Lamar with his girlfriend from high school.

After having five continuous wins, Douglas lost his first match against David Bey in November 1981. A month later, he went on to defeat Don Johnson. In October 1982, he boxed against Norway’s Steffen Tangstad. It resulted in the first draw of his career.
