Barcelona midfielder, Pedri said Sergio Busquets calmed his and Gavi’s worries before Spain’s 7-0 win against Costa Rica this week.
Sergio Busquets, Spain’s captain, encouraged two Barcelona teenagers, Pedri and Gavi, ahead to Spain’s 7-0 victory over Costa Rica in their first World Cup match, according to Pedri. It was a historic night for the youthful tandem, as they both made their World Cup debuts.
Pedri’s statement
Speaking to El Partizado de COPE, Pedri said: “I thought I would be more nervous. Busquets told me and Gavi to be calm, he gave us a mini talk the day before when we went out to warm up, that we were calm, that we not pay attention to everything that is set up before the game and those words from the captain reassure you. He was very calm, he was seen inside the field, that we were enjoying.”
Spain appeared to be the most impressive team at the World Cup thus far, owing largely to their play in midfield, which frequently went through the Barcelona trio that started the game.
Luis Enrique’s side led 3-0 at the break, relieving pressure on the Spanish players and giving the technically gifted Pedri time to shine.
While Pedri’s overall performance was excellent, it was Gavi who made history. The 18-year-old became the youngest player to score in a World Cup finals since Pele did so for Brazil when he was 17 in 1958. Gavi scored Spain’s fifth goal with a well-executed volley in the 74th minute.
Pedri will almost certainly be partnering both Busquets and Gavi when Spain takes on Germany on Sunday. Spain might advance to the knockout stages with a win over Hansi Flick’s team, who could exit the competition if such a result occurs.
