Former Manchester Ilkay Gundogan has said that he never had the chance to say goodbye to his former boss, Pep Guardiola.
The Barcelona ace said he only told the Spaniard his decision to leave over the phone.
The Germany international left Manchester City for Barcelona this summer after helping the Citizens win the historic treble.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t say goodbye in person because I only made the decision after the Champions League final, two days before the DFB game against Colombia,” he told Bild.
“That was probably the hardest phone call I’ve ever had in my life. The conversation was emotional, but Pep was also happy for me.
“I switched to the club that was close to his heart and his childhood, so to speak – and as a fan he was very happy about that.
“He also told me: If I need anything, I should contact him at any time. It was brilliant to experience Pep as a coach. This will help me a lot over the next few years.
“I was in Manchester again before the start of the season and had a farewell party with Riyad Mahrez, which all the players also came to.
“That was a very nice goodbye. And contact with ex-colleagues and coaches will certainly continue.”
