“I hope he stays in the national team”- Croatia’s boss, Dalic on Modric’s future

Luka Modric’s future with the national team has been brought up by Croatian manager Zlatko Dalic, who reiterated that he doesn’t want to see him retire.

The future of Modric received a lot of attention as Croatia lost to Argentina 3-0 and exited the World Cup in the semi-finals. Many thought the loss would be his final match wearing a Croatia jersey, so he was greeted with a standing ovation and applause as he was replaced late in the game.

Dalic, the manager, has spoken candidly about the midfielder’s feelings and whether he expects him to retire.

Zlatko Dalic’s statement on Modric’s future

Speaking to reporters, Dalic admitted: “He (Modric) was very disappointed yesterday, the defeat and the match were hard on him. It’s logical that he feels that way (considering retirement), it was really hard for him.

“I hope he stays in the national team. Of course, he will decide about it himself. We have a game on Saturday and we’ll talk after that. It will be difficult for me if Modrić says goodbye.”

He added: “If Luka says goodbye to the national team, it will be a pity and regret for all the fans around the world… It will be difficult for me too if he decides otherwise, but the whole world respects Modrić. It would be nice if he continued.”

With Croatia, Modric, now 37, came in second place at the 2018 World Cup and won Player of the Tournament for his efforts. He again played a key role as Croatia advanced to the quarterfinals in Qatar. However, Croatia must compete in a third-place play-off against the loser of France vs. Morocco before they can depart.

The legendary midfielder could bid international football a final farewell in the World Cup’s third-place play-off before returning to action with Real Madrid.
