Aston Villa failed to go top of the Premier League for at least 24 hours, following their 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on Friday night.
Unai Emery’s men needed an outright win at home to leapfrog Liverpool and Arsenal to the summit of the table.
However, despite their overwhelming dominance, the hosts failed to create clear-cut chances and trouble Chris Wilder’s men.
Leon Bailey saw a goal ruled out after a VAR check, because there was a foul on Sheffield’s goalkeeper.
The visitors then struck a shock goal in the 87th minute of the game at Villa Park.
Gustavo Hamer did brilliantly to hold the ball after a driving run and then cut back for the waiting Cameron Archer.
Archer then coolly applied the finishing touch beyond Emi Martinez.
But there was enough time for Nicolo Zaniolo to rise highest and head in his first Premier League goal from a Douglas Luiz cross.
The result means Villa remain second behind Arsenal on goal difference. Liverpool are in third place with 38 points.
