EPL: Michael Edwards rejects Chelsea job

Michael Edwards, a former director at Liverpool, turned down the opportunity to lead as Chelsea’s Sporting director this summer.

Edwards joined Liverpool in 2011 as an analyst and later served as a director for seven years before leaving this summer after developing a reputation as a skilled negotiator in the transfer market.

Edwards stated his intention to take some time off from football after leaving Liverpool, but Chelsea contacted the director earlier this summer in an effort to persuade him to come back to the game right away.

Edwards, however, has reportedly stated that he is not interested in looking for a new job this summer, according to The Athletic.

It’s significant to note that Edwards is not believed to have completely ruled out joining Chelsea, so a future approach cannot be ruled out.

Owner Todd Boehly is currently overseeing Chelsea’s transfer business as interim sporting director, but a permanent appointment has long been the goal, ideally during this transfer window.

The perception is that Chelsea won’t hire a sporting director this summer given that Edwards declined to sign and a number of their other targets were already employed or otherwise occupied during the transfer window.
