EPL: It’s strange – Sir Alex Ferguson’s ex-assistant shocked by Maguire’s decision

Former Manchester United assistant manager Meulensteen is shocked over Maguire’s decision to remain at the club

Ex-Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been told it is time for him to leave Old Trafford.

Rene Meulensteen, former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, admitted his surprise that Maguire even wants to stay despite clearly not being wanted by manager Erik ten Hag.

“Is it time for Harry Maguire to move on? Yeah,” he told talkSPORT.

“And I don’t know why [he’s staying put] because at the end of the day I think it’s very clear. The writing has been on the wall for a bit.

He wonders what the player intends to gain by remaining at a club where he would end up not playing or used sparing for cup games.

“So I find it really strange what has happened there, because if I were Harry, I would be definitely knocking on Eric’s door,” he added.

“I would be saying, ‘Listen, I’m not really in your plans, please let me go’.”

The England international announced a few weeks ago that the manager has told him that he would no longer be the captain at Old Trafford.

A day later, the Red Devils voted Bruno Fernandes as their next skipper but Maguire has vowed to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his place.
