Enekwechi sets new Shot Put record as team Nigeria retain third spot

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi successfully defended his Shot Put title in record time as the 22nd African Athletics Championship in Mauritius came to a close on Sunday.

The 29-year-old threw 21.20m to break his own championship record of 21.08m set four years ago in Asaba, Delta state, and is now the first Nigerian to successfully defend a Shot Put title in the championship’s history.

Enekwechi’s gold medal brought Nigeria’s medal count to five, while high jumper Mike Edwards won silver and the 4x400m men and women’s relay teams took bronze, ensuring an under-strength Nigerian team finished third in the medal table for the third time in a row.

Nigeria took home 11 medals, including five gold, three silver, and three bronze.

Tobiloba Amusan, a sprint hurdler, opened the floodgates of medals by retaining the 100m hurdles title.
