Hussaini Maifata, 26, was sentenced to one month in prison by an Area Court in Jos on Thursday for stealing building materials from a shop.
Shawomi Bokkos, the judge who sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to trespass and theft, begged the court for mercy.
The Judge sentenced the convict to a N10,000 fine or one month in prison for theft and ordered him to pay N200,000 in compensation to the complainant or face six months in prison in default.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat , told the court that the case was reported at the Jos”C” Division Police Station on Sept. 28, 2022, by Mr Hyacinth Opara, the shop owner.
He said the complainant reported that the convict on the same date the case was reported, trespassed into his shop and stole a bending machine cast, iron rods of various sizes and door keys.
The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation, the convict confessed to have committed the act and two pieces of iron rods were recovered from him.
The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria. (NAN)
