On Tuesday, a Magistrate Court in Jos sentenced Nuhu Jonathan, 35, to two years in prison for unlawful possession of a locally made gun.
Jonathan was sentenced by Judge Tapmwa Gotep after pleading guilty to the charge.
However, the convict was given the option of paying a N30,000 fine.
The judge stated that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to those who would commit such acts.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Frank Alex, had told the court that the case was reported on Jan. 9, at the Rantya Police Station by officers on duty.
The prosecutor said that the convict was found with the locally made gun during a stop and search by Operation Safe Heaven, but could not explain how he came about the gun.
The offence, he said, is punishable under the Plateau state Penal Code Law. (NAN)
