Buhari visits Kuje prison

President Muhammadu Buhari is in a meeting with his service chiefs and some ministers.

It is taking place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Among those present are: Usman Baba, inspector-general of police (IGP), Rauf Aregbesola, minister of interior, and Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and minister of justice.

The meeting is to discuss the attack on the Kuje correctional facility.

Gunmen had attacked the prison with explosives on Tuesday night.

The ministry of interior had said about 600 inmates escaped from the prison which is about 50 kilometers away from the presidential villa.

Shuaib Belgore, permanent secretary, ministry of interior, said Boko Haram was behind the attack.

“The inmates here are 994. We understand they are Boko Haram terrorists and came specifically for their conspirators,” he had said.

“Many of them have returned, some were retrieved from the bushes they were hiding. We have retrieved about 300 out of about 600 that got out of the jail.”

The president has since paid a visit to the facility to ascertain the level of damage done by the insurgents.
