Slum King: Episode 1 hooks viewers with its promising kick-off and revenge theme

Slum King review

Africa Magic Showcase premiered the first episode of ‘Slum King’ on October 8th, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride of emotions that leaves us eagerly awaiting more.

This star-studded crime series, produced by Chichi Nworah, boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Tobi Bakre in the lead role as Maje aka Maje Esu, Teniola Aladese, Jide Kene Achufusi, Charles Inojie, Kanayo O Kanayo, Idia Aisien, Olarotimi Fakunle, Bolaji Ogunmola, Korede Lawal, Funsho Adeolu, Etta Jomaria, and Perfect Ehis, among others.

The story kicks off with Edafe, who, at the tender age of 11, witnesses the brutal massacre of his family by armed robbers. The catalyst for this tragic event was Edafe’s simple mistake – forgetting to lock the doors. Riddled with guilt and trauma, Edafe transforms into Maje, the charismatic king of the slums, after spending several years as a troubled street tout.

‘Slum King’ delivers a stark lesson on the unpredictability of life, with its highs and lows. What was meant to be a family celebration takes a dark turn when armed robbers invade their home, leading to the brutal murder of Edafe’s entire family. The cruel irony is palpable, as Edafe’s father had just offered a prayer for their family’s lasting legacy moments before tragedy struck.

The theme of revenge simmers beneath the surface already from the first episode as Edafe transitions from shock and fear to an unyielding desire for vengeance, evident in the subtle yet distinct change in his expression immediately after his family’s tragic demise.

Revenge is also seen revolving around Monday the preacher, who presents a pious image to the public but reveals a darker, abusive side behind closed doors. The last scene leaves us questioning what the future holds for him, as Monday’s daughter strikes him on the head with a pestle to stop him from going all violent on his wife and son, leaving him unconscious and the family panicking over what to do next.

Well! We will find out in Episode 2.
