Movie Review: Anikulapo was ruined by Bimbo Ademoye and Kunle Remi’s n*de scene

Anikulapo netflix

Kunle Afolayan’s highly anticipated movie, Anikulapo started streaming on Netflix earlier today and we have sat through the entire 2 hours and 22 minutes long film to bring you this review.

Anikulapo, a movie Anikulapo that showcases the Yoruba culture while following a man running away from the clutches of death, is produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan but inspired by Ifayemi Elebuibon.

Anikulapo tells the story of Saro, a traveling clothes weaver, who was beaten to death for having an affair with Alaafin’s youngest wife, Arolake. After Akala a mystical bird gives him life again, Saro goes on the run with Arolake, hoping they can start a life together.

The cast of the Anikulapo includes Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Sola Sobowale, Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Taiwo Hassan, Faithia Balogun, Adebayo Salami, Kareem Adepoju, Moji Olayiwola, and Aisha Lawal.

As expected, Kunle Afolayan, a filmmaker, who is reeved in the beauty of movie production, directing, and acting, did absolutely amazing work with Anikulapo.

Anikulapo movie review

Aesthetically and culturally, Anikulapo is a beautiful film that introduces the global audience to the Yoruba culture; the dialogue, the narration, the characters, the details, and the quality were excellent, but in terms of storytelling, maybe they could have cut short the film a bit, it was too long!

We barely managed to sit through the end of the movie, it began to drag, and then when it finally ended, it was bland and left us asking questions.

For instance, when the so-called Akala bird arrived to resurrect him, we weren’t sure if the bird really wanted to make him alive or if it was just Saro’s luck that got him out of death’s trap. It would have been awesome if the significance of the mysterious bird was used more in the film.

Also, why did the Queen rape Anikulapo? We didn’t understand how their love story evolved. We only saw her grab him on his way home, rape him, and then in the next scene that had the two of them, they took off their clothes to have sex; a totally unnecessary scene of nudity that ruined the movie if you ask us. It wasn’t until the third scene we saw them actually talk.

Oh, by the way, Bimbo Ademoye owes her fans an explanation for going against her words in an interview earlier this year where she said “Never! My dad is watching. I can’t play nude or a sex scene in any movie”

Also, why did Saro open his eyes at the end, does that mean he lives on?

It is worthy of note that the movie centered its lessons on greed. Right from the start, Saro gets a warning from many that don’t bite more than you can chew, but human greed is very vicious and wouldn’t listen until you are at rock bottom or on your death bed. Despite the warnings, it landed him in trouble before his death and even after he got a second chance at life.

We absolutely loved how Kunle Afolayan featured many veterans in the movie; Actors like Kareem Adepoju (Baba Wande), Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) and others came through with the intelligent usage of the idioms and proverbs, including the newbie, Kunle Afolayan’s daughter, Eyiyemi Afolayan who played the betrayed princess.

From us at Kemi Filani, it is a 7.5 over 10 for Anikulapo.

Loved it but wasn’t comfortable with the nudity. I mean it was unnecessary and we are not oyibos. I hope bimbo used a body double but still for me the idea of sex is more than any nudity.

The nudity was most likely an overlooked part of the contract signed with netflix. Just a guess.

I agree with how the movie ended, it was bland and I was asking myself why I watched the movie in the first place.

The great points from this movie would be the production quality, props and costumes.

The nostalgia that comes with seeing things I’ve not seen in a long time is really great but the storytelling especially the last 15 minutes is way below standard for Kunle Afolayan.

I will rate Ageshinkole over this anyday anytime.

Albeit, I hope we can see another movie by mainframe productions sometime soon.

I had no problem with the nudity because the story completely overshadowed it. I think most people don’t understand the movie. Akala is a mythical bird that resurrects those that died untimely or unjustifiably. The bird wakes you up to tell the story behind your death, if it is justified, it will send you back to everlasting sleep if it is not it will resurrect you giving you a second chance at life. Unfortunately Akala found Saro’s death to be justified and was about to put him back to everlasting sleep when Arolake intervened and used a stick to chase the bird away, the bird was stunned and mistakenly dropped his resurrection sand guord which Arolake picked up. The rest is pretty much self explanatory… it truly is a beautiful movie, well scripted, casted and acted with great cinematography.

Fully in support of this. The movie is 10 0ver 10 for me. I am an igbo but I enjoyed every bit of the movie. The culture, costumes, acting, everything perfect. I love the storyline too. It portrayed the greedy nature of man and what happens when a man controls wealth or has power. I don’t get it when people talk ill of the movie. I also didn’t feel the lengthy of the movie because I enjoyed every bit… kudos, to all crew. Not all stories will give you happy ending or explain everything in details. The ending was kind of a puzzle which was easy to answer.

Great comment here. If you look at the death scene at the end it is different from the first one, and as the bird would usually do, wake you and then ask what killed you, if found worthy, you’d keep living but if not, he would send the person back to ‘everlasting sleep’ like you said and he isn’t actually worthy to be resurrected.
On the sex scene, I don’t find it bad, though not very necessary but the story and what transpired later somehow numbs the effect of that.
It’s a beautiful story well acted and I really have no problems with it.

How is Saro’s death justified? The only harm Saro commited was cheating Arolake and that is human nature. She cheated the king and the entire Oyo Kingdom, she cheated Akala when death came for Saro. Arolake deserved what was coming to her. She was a bed warmer to the end which was justified.

The nudity is disgusting, it almost put me off. The ending too was confusing, It just end abruptly. And the mystical bird was not giving enough screen scene.
What I love though was the costumes and the periodic scene and environment. I gave double thumb 👍 for this in Netflix

I still try to understand where the issue is with nudity in Africa.
Not 20 years ago our Grandmothers in the Village walked topless with just a wrapper around their waist.
And because there is nudity in a Movie it diminishes it? Are we moving forward or backwards…

I was expecting a tragic ending for Anikulapo for greed and betrayal of trust. But it didn’t go that way. Another I observed that people were not talking about was forcing ladies to marry someone their fathers wanted. Because children shouldn’t disobey parents does not give room for them to suppress and totally dispossess their children of the rights to choice making.

if you believe that it was bimbo and kunle’s nakedness you saw, then you are on a long thing, i think they used stunt double in that scene, however even if they did, they were doing a job, only Nigerians will be so judgemental abt the scene with overly religious mumbo jumbo. Also the scene didn’t spoil anything its meant to show how in love arolake and saro were. It was a job well executed. Kemi filani pls dont be sentimental, it’s very typical of a naija person.

The bird raised him the second time around because he died an untimely death since he is young etc but this time around the bird will probably send him to everlasting sleep because (1) he cheated death the first time (2) his second death is certainly justified and (3) I think for Akala this one is very personal…

        October 2, 2022 at 10:10 pm

It was explained at the beginning that the bird wakes the dead to question them. If the person’s death is justified the person will rest on, and if it is not justified the person will live on. So Saro opening his eyes at the end of the movie is for questioning, then it’s left for the audience to judge from the birds point of view.

Well well, if they were trying to portray anything about the Yoruba culture, then that’s a great hitch to it because the Yoruba culture doesn’t condole exposing nudity and this ain’t about being judgemental. It’s just facts stunt doubles or not. If you ask me, it seems to be a trademark in Kunle’s movies he’s adapting a Western Nigerian style to movies

You are right. I kept telling people that the nude wasn’t Bimbo’s breast. If they look closely they can see that it’s a rubber breast like this rubber dildo am sure some guys understand what am saying. That is a completely rubber breast with editing. And in type of ancient movies like this NUDE is needed 💯. We all watch American movies and they need that.

I don’t get how one listened to the narrator and the akala bird at the beginning and is still be confused.

Minus the sex scene, the whole theme and topic behind the movie’s storyline is an adult one because it centers around polygamy, adultery, sex in exchange for financial empowerment etc. Are these things you would normally discuss with your 10 year old? No! So don’t be a hypocrite and hide behind nudity etc…

The Akala Bird that decides if the dead person should get a second chance had decided that Saro did not deserve it before Arolake’s intervention which saved his life.

Unnecessary nudity? Who has sex with clothes on? When Halle Berry took off her clothes in Monster’s Ball, she got an Oscar. Nigerians and our fake prudish morality! A brief flash of nudity- to show what stole Saro’s heart

At the end, the Akala Bird comes again, we already know the bird’s opinion on Saro. There’s no Arolake to save him this time, he is dead dead. Finish

For me, maybe because of the haste with which you critique this movie, you were oblivious of some historical facts established at the beginning of the movie. For example, the Akala bird has been narrated as possession the mystical power to check on the dead and determined whether they should live again or not, after their death. In Saro’s case, Olori Arolake cut short the work of Akala, immidiately she was aware that life has been breathed into Saro, by her attack on the Akala bird, thereby disconnecting the latter with it’s healing power which Saro subsequently used for healing.
Also, talk of the rape scene and the burgeoning love affair between the two, the director paint a picturesque of an unexpected love gesture from Olori to Saro, which is reciprocated slowly but eventually. Friendship or “feelings” as we call it here developed along the line.

Overall, this movie, to be is a great effort and one that is rare in the Nollywood industry. Although I was also turned off by the pornographic scenes, I strongly believe that this work deserves more accolades than it can ever be given. For first, it is not a mere work of imagination, but a story rooted in Yoruba cosmological and epistemological background, being inspired by a story in Ifa. It therefore, portend also, a great work of research, an obviously missing item in on the Nollywood checklist.

      October 2, 2022 at 12:25 am

Thank you. The prudish ‘we’ at Kemi Filani missed the entire point of the movie. They obviously also did not learn the overall lesson that one who betrays their savior leaves himself to a shameful end. Arolake fell in love with Saro, betrayed the king who loved her and lived to regret it. Saro betrayed Arolake and lost his life as a result. Arolake who cheated death to give Saro a second chance at life now became an object of ridicule to Saro’s wives.

Kemi Filani Thank you o. 🙏🏾 It was unnecessary. To think that in the same movie, in Shola Shobowale’s ‘sex’ scenes we saw nothing yet we saw what knew what we needed to know. This is something that has lately bothered me too. We’ve always been able to tell that 2 people had sex without the graphic details so why adding them in?

I really do not think you sat down and watched this movie well enough. I am surprised at everything you have critiqued here cos the movie is quite explanatory…..I mean, very explanatory.

When I first decided to see this movie and saw it was a 2hrs+ movie, I was wondering how I would survive 2hrs while reading subtitle as I am not Yoruba…..but Jeezzzzz, Kunle never disappoints. I was glued to my screen to the very end.

I won’t comment on the Akala bird as I see some comments have rightly addressed this. I suggest you go see the movie again.

I also don’t understand how you don’t understand how their love story evolved. Whether you call that rape or whatever, the next time he passed there he wanted it, he expected it to come and that was why when he got home and saw her half nude on his bed, biko which english were you expecting them to speak……they jumped on each other.

……….and the nude scenes, or please wake up from your slumber. There was nothing absolutely uncomfortable with those and I can bet that wasn’t their real bodies. Abi do you have sex with your clothes on?

In all…….I am proud to be a Nigerian right now. The movie was a bomb and I so loved the cultural display despite being igbo.

Madam chineye, while I agree with some of your points, your view on the sex part is inconsequential. Im shocked you enjoy that Nollywood is now promoting sex and nudity.

You say there is nothing wrong going naked to have sex, then in all the uncountable times sex was had in the movie, all the characters should have been naked.

Sola sobowale, Kunle afolayan, Taiwo Hassan, should have all removed their clothes for us to see them having sex naaa and not just when bimbo and kunle remi had theirs.

Shame on Kunle Afolayan and shame on Nollywood for badly trying to be Hollywood, they want to be Hollywood so bad that they start copying everything. Who knows they might release porn film for us next.

This review is Spot on. Totally unnecessary scenes. My concern is how partnership with Netflix must equate R rated films with nudity. Kunle has told better stories without nudity. We have a heritage in nollywood, they should stick to it.

How come noone is talking about Hakeem.. So they just brought uncle Hakeem from Hollywood to coman wear dashiki and fila to coman be looking left and be grunting like a pig in heat? Okay, that’s not fair. A pig in heat has more mannerisms and is more vocal. Wait… What was the point if not Aseju? Cos in my opinion, e con be like say the whole no talking hampered his ability to interpret the role. Totally unnecessary something.

Yeah you’re right they could have taught him a little yoruba at leadt to pull through his scenes,
Anyways sha they explained the reason for him not speaking. We go manage am like dat.
For me without those nude scenes, the idea of the story would have still been passed accurately, words or being lost in thoughts scenes coud still depict how much they long for each other.
Stunt double or no stunt double, if you dream that someone you know did something bad, in reality you’ll still see that person jn that bad light.
It’s a film embedded in tradition, beliefs, cultural heritage and lessons to learn which I believe should be for the whole family. That for me didn’t cut it. Thank God I didn’t watch with my kids

A Rich cultural movie that showcase our Yoruba culture though some scenes not well linked but there is always room for improvement. We should stop castigating our people cos we all see foreign movies with unnecessary scenes but keep quiet in their comment sections or go ahead with praises to favourite characters. Let’s support our own Nigerian Kunle Afolayan with fantastic works. Oga welldone ooo. Read through people feedback and pick few things cos no be everybody Sabi talk. U do well and keep making us proud.
You are going for the zenith in this international stage. Kudos

The word ruined by the reviewer is too harsh, weather sex scene or not, it was accepted by both parties, the film speaaks and promote Yoruba culture.
The cast, costumes and the production of the movie is fantastic, but my complain is what happened to Saro when he is unable to wake the prince and WHAT IS THE END OF AROLAKE……

Nigerians should learn about stunts double and movie prothesics before critising anyone here for the sex scene.
Sex scences are normal part of movies and I don’t understand why Nigerians do this hypocritical act of forming saint.
Movies will clearly say nudity, specifying age limit, yet parents still let their children see it.
    I rate the movie a 8 out of 10.
    Movie set- 1
    Cultural elements- 1
Use of yoruba as a primary language – 2
    Art Performance- 2
    Plot- 1
    Cost- 1
I feel the ending was bland too, it missed something.
The end didn’t satisfy our wait all through the movie.

Bro Jimmy, leave them to be debating about sex or no sex. I was baffled at Hakeem’s role. He was totally under utilized and it was painful watching him and his Olori have close to little to do in the film. Replace them with any other actor, any other, it would have made no difference.

Hakeem wasn’t utilized in the movie and it was painful to watch. He could have managed to speak Yoruba with his accent and it would have blended because Saro did’nt speak the native Yoruba and he fitted in. Hakeem’s kingdom was’nt part of Oyo(according to the movie) so the change of tongue would have been welcomed

You all talking about the sex scene are all bunch of hypocrites. Many of you will even do it with your full chest if giving a role in that movie. Many of you watch other countries movie and enjoy the romantic sex scene they show. Una need they appreciate person sometime. And to all against kunle production of that scene should go manage your own drama team at least. No b to make noise for comment here

Isn’t it because it’s a movie that makes you say so? It’s suppose to be like lives of people in another community in a video for others to see. There’s nudity yes, u saw in the video.. So do you mean in old times, people don’t show nudity to have sex or it’s because you did not see the video of it? My dear it’s all part of it, to create the idea of the movie being a natural occurrence. Just try to think about it and understand it. Thank you

Bunch of hypocrites! Hail Hollywood for sex scenes but criticise their own. What you should all understand especially for those saying nudity is not our thing is that, these producers didn’t have only Nigerians in mind while producing these movies.

Nollywood is reaching a larger market worldwide, so just don’t watch if you see the R-18 if you feel uncomfortable with sex on screen. Don’t say someone else’s work is ruined or whatever Y’all are saying here. If you don’t like it, do your own. Haba, una own don too much abeg.

I just laugh yesterday cos the kind critics wey I dey see stupid.

Do you know what it takes to produce a movie?
Our culture doesn’t permit us to go naked either…

Kemi Filani… you are a hater!! Watch the movie again and you’ll understand as you’re too dumb to. The mystical bird that appeared usually does to dead people thrown in the forest and sorta woke saro for that short period and realized he deserved to die and was abt putting him back to his death before Arolake saved him. So it’s understandable. The movie wasn’t too long neither was the nude scene much of a deal. 9.5/10

Wonderful movie. Fully support the nudity in this movie, very decent infact, I’ve seen worse on tv. The Sex scene doesn’t take away anything from the grand scheme of the movie but adds to it in a very beautiful way, Which is why the betrayal is very touching. The film touched very important topics in society depicted in a fantastical way without being cringe like the typical nollywood movies. This movie is the STANDARD.

Loads of loopholes in the movie. Like it was rushed or something. Movie was predictable along the line but I kept hoping since its Kunle Afolayan but I was left disappointed. Acting from the veterans was top notch. The film was zagazaga with the story line. At the end we can listen to his future readings from the past.So I mean with all the warnings he still had to tow the part? Movie title is suppose to be AIGBORAN.Movie was interesting to watch though

Honestly, this review is right about Saro and Arolake’s love progression. I was shocked how we went from meeting once to making love in the bush – no scenes for building chemistry.

The mystical bird confused me too. I had to replay to understand what that was. I also wondered, if it was spiritual how did Arolake see and know what the bird dropped could raise the dead.

I also did not get that rape Abi whatever that happened in the bush scene sha. What was that? And also for a spiritual bird all it took was one hit for it to scurry away frightened with no return whatsoever to collect its hours back? You just let mortals use your power like that. Toh.

Thank you for this analysis…I kept wondering if I was the one that felt a lot of things were off…I’ve been looking forward to this review…

Kemi Filani God bless you for me. Your review is spot on.

    So many unexplained issues.
    I totally agree with you.
    Firstly, the nudity was unnecessary.

It could have,if the s*x was probably

intense and all, but ko necessary.

Then you see that bird part ehn.

How can you attack a mystical bird with ordinary stone?? How can you take the gourd with your bare hands and there was no reaction? How can you walk in a supposed “evil forest filled with corpses” and we didn’t see anything scary?? Atleast even a snake or something? That left eye should have already gotten infected even before he was resurrected; we didn’t see where he was treated or how.
Also their love story had no chemistry.

You don’t just jump on a grown man and rape him in the forest; all we saw was just a secretive sexual relationship;there was nothing to consider it as genuine love so how did they fall madly in love?…Wo movie was nice but some parts seemed unrealistic.

The movie should be rated 10 or 9 of 10 not 7.5. The movie is rated 18, so why should the nude scene be a problem. In the olden days, they were having and so why can’t it be depicted in the scene. I believe the act made the scene more real and this shouldn’t have anything to do with our culture like you said. As for the end part of the movie, I feel we are left with many questions because there will be a second part which I can’t wait to watch. That movie is flawless and it deserves an award.

The movie is a perfect 10 please stop capping nonsense! A movie that goes the way viewers want is not worth watching and the nude scene makes it more relatable. Nollywood is big enough to accommodate your movie too so please make yours and remove nudity from it but please stop denigrating someone’s hard work which is obviously great!
