Nigerian celebrities have reacted to the disqualification of Lionheart movie by the Oscar Academy.
The movie which features Genevieve Nnaji was Nigeria’s submission for Best International Feature. It got disqualified because it goes against the policy of the category.
The policy states that movies have to be mostly non-English before they can make it into the category for Best International Feature.
Lionheart only has 11 minutes out of its 95 minutes in non-English.
However, reacting to the disqualification on Twitter, Genevieve Nnaji wrote;
“This movie represents the way we speak as Nigerians. This includes English which acts as a bridge between the 500+ languages spoken in our country; thereby making us #OneNigeria.” She added, “It’s no different to how French connects communities in former French colonies. We did not choose who colonized us. As ever, this film and many like it, is proudly Nigerian.”
