Nigerian legendary singer, Charles Oputa better known by his stage name, Charly Boy or Area Fada has posed an important question to Nigerians on the essence of religion.
The outspoken singer and activist, via his Instagram page, questioned the essence of religion as he reacted to a viral video of clergyman, Pastor E.A Adeboye demanding offerings ranging from N100 million to N1 billion.
Calling religion a business, he stated that most clergymen, whom he considers as God of men, are into Jesus’ enterprise.
“God of Men. The Jesus Enterprise.
Do we need Religion?
Discuss”.
As expected, his statement created buzz online with some concurring with many, while others disagreed with him.
Concurring with him, One Mazi Elo wrote, “He is being shamelessly specific of how much he needs. Their mind no go touch the ground
One Isi Onye, defending Adeboye wrote, “It must have been for church special projects
One Official Joyce Felix wrote, “Can u imagine this? This is why I find it difficult to go to church because church is now a business place
One Ney1 44d wrote, “Not minding where the fund was coming from
One Spilocy Kruger wrote, “Area father I am a big fan but will not go down well if you criticize my own religion.
One Rebellius 4 Progressive Naija wrote, “Religion is a big hindrance to the collective progress of humans
One Deuce Courage wrote, “Religion is a mental illness. All religions are màrn-made
One Desanya Maestro wrote, “You are free to criticize or disagree Area Fada but giving has and will remain a spiritual principle”.
Similarly, a month back, Daddy Freeze had slammed religious leaders over their silence on Big Brother Naija All-Stars winner, Ilebaye’s promise to pay tithe.
Reacting to it, Freeze noted the hypocrisy in religious leaders as they were always quick and outspoken in condemning the reality show but have stayed silent to Ilebaye’s promise to pay tithe.
Still, on religion, Daddy Freeze had stirred backlash as he revealed several reasons why he couldn’t serve God, who he referred to as ‘god’.
According to him, he can’t serve a God who couldn’t resurrect Mohbad, who watches tithe paying children in hunger and penury, and who couldn’t stop the rigging of the election.
Big Brother Naija’s former housemate, Bambam reprimanded him for his words as she lectured him on religion.
