McLaughlin started her career when her parents signed her up for track and field when she was six years old. Initially, she ran for fun but later decided to make a career out of it.

During her freshman year in high school, she set the world age 14 and the National high school freshman record during the National Junior championship.
She then tried for the IAAF World Junior Championship but had to let it go because she had to be a year older than she was then. So, instead, she took part in the 100m hurdles and set the new record in the world age group with a time of 13.34.
She continued working harder, and in 2015, she set the age 15 best record in the world during the National Youth Trials. The same year, she even became the IAAF World Youth champion.
It was just the start, as in 2016, she broke the prep record and world youth best record set by Maxie. In the same game, she also broke the American junior record of Lashinda Demus. She did all this at the age of seventeen.
