Nicholas Alexander Faldo was born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, on 18 July 1957. At the age of 14, he became interested in golf after he saw Jack Nicklaus play the 1971 Masters. Three years later, Faldo qualified to play in the 1974 English Amateur at Woodhall Spa.
When Faldo was 18 years old, he won both the English Amateur at Royal Lytham and the British Youths Open Amateur Championship. In the same year, he represented Great Britain in the Commonwealth Tournament in South Africa.

Nick Faldo started his professional golf career in 1976 when he joined the European Professional Golfers Association and achieved instant success on the European Tour, winning the 1977 and 1978 seasons. He continued his success in the 1980s, winning two consecutive Sun Alliance PGA Championships in England in 1980 and 1981.
In the mid-1980s, Faldo participated in many major championships, including winning the Peugeot Spanish Open. In 1987, he won his first major title at The Open Championship at Muirfield.
