Leonard Francois was motivated to teach her girls to play tennis after witnessing Venus and Serena Williams during the 1999 French Open. At fifteen, Osaka began working with Patrick Tauma at the ISP Academy. Osaka took an extremely unconventional path to the top. She only competed in a few junior events before making the jump to the ITF Women’s circuit, in contrast to most tennis players who must first navigate the ITF Junior Circuit.
