Addison Mitchell McConnell Jr. was born on January 20, 1942, in Sheffield, Alabama to his parents Julia Shockley and Addison Mitchell McConnell. He grew up in nearby Athens.

In 1968, Mitch McConnell was married to Sherrill Redmon. They were the parents of three children: Claire McConnell, Porter McConnell, and Elly McConnell. The couple divorced in 1980. In 1993, he married former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao.
McConnell was struck by polio when he was two but overcame it. He is a Southern Baptist. He is the founder of the James Madison Center for Free Speech.

After completing his law, Mitch McConnell was drafted into the United States Army Reserve. He was released after five weeks in 1967 following medical reasons. Before that, he did interning for John Sherman Cooper, who was a Senator at that time. He later went on to become an assistant of Marlow Cook.
He became a Deputy Assistant Attorney General and worked with Antonin Scalia under Gerald R. Ford. In 1977, he was elected as the Jefferson County Judge/Executive. McConnell was again re-elected in 1981.
In 1984, he ran for the United States Senate against Democrat Walter Dee Huddleston. He won the election by a margin of only 0.4%. He did a series of TV campaigns called ‘Where’s Dee’. In 1990, in the re-election, he won by a margin of 4.4% over Harvey I. Sloane.
He again went on to win over Steve Beshear in the 1996 election. This time he won by 12.6%. In 2002, he won by 29.4% against Lois Combs Weinberg. He defeated Bruce Lunsford and Matt Bevin in 2008 and 2014 respectively. McConnell was the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in the ’98 and 2000 elections.
