Kennedy abandoned his plans to attend Yale Law School after taking corporate law courses at Stanford when the US entered WWII. Kennedy attempted to enlist in the Army in the year 1940. After months of preparation, he was medically denied due to lower back problems.

On 24 September 1941, Kennedy enrolled in the US Naval Reserve with the help of Alan Kirk, then-director of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). From there, he was sent to the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C.

In January 1942, Kennedy was sent to the Sixth Naval District Headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina. From 27 July to 27 September, he volunteered at the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons Training Center in Melville, Rhode Island.

On 10 October, he became a junior lieutenant. The death of a close childhood friend, Marine Corps Second Lieutenant George Houk Mead Jr., who died in combat on Guadalcanal in August and was posthumously given the Navy Cross, kept Kennedy down in early November.
