Born on March 31st, 1935, Herb Alpert is of Jewish descent. He was born in Boyle Heights, Eastside Los Angeles, California, and grew up in the same locality. He was born to Tiller and Louis Alpert, who was a tailor with a talent to play the mandolin. Both were emigrants from Radomyshl and Romania.

Herb’s family members were practitioners of music, and he was taught to play the violin from a very early age by his mother. He learnt trumpet playing at the age of 10. His brother, David, was also an enthusiast and played the drums. He did his schooling at Fairfax High School and graduated in 1952. He attended the University of Southern California.
