Beginning in the late 1950s, Bacharach penned numerous successful songs and also composed music for theater and screen, often working with lyricist Hal David.
Henry Cowell, Bohuslav Martinů, and Darius Milhaud were Bacharach’s instructors. He composed music for Steve Lawrence and Vic Damone in the 1950s, and he went on tour with Marlene Dietrich afterwards. He started his lengthy collaboration with David in the late 1950s. Together, they would create numerous songs, particularly for vocalist Dionne Warwick, such as “Walk On By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” David and he established the successful musical Promises, Promises (1968), and their score for the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) won an Academy Award, as did the movie’s song “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.”
