He is of Italian ancestry, and he enrolled at the Highline College in 1996, he played his first year with his basketball team, which was named the Thunderbirds, and then he redshirted his second year. When he was a freshman, he averaged 9.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 16.3 points, and 1.2 steals every game. He also recorded seventeen double-doubles, and he also led the team in rebounds, and blocks and his free throw percentage was 75%.
In 1998 Brian later got transferred to the University of Southern California, and in his first year with the team, USC Trojans, he was the only player who started 28 games. He also led the team Trojans in scoring the 14.6 points. During his second year with the team, he was named to the All-Pac-19 first team. He won the 1999 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year award.
