It has been reported that a deaf Kenyan couple that dated for over a year through text messages got married last weekend in a wedding ceremony that was presided over by a deaf pastor.

According to report, William Mwaura, 29, and Phyllis Wawira 28, got married at Kang’eng’u ACK church in Kandara Constituency, Murang’a, Kenya on Saturday after a one and half years of courtship.

Their wedding which featured a deaf priest, deaf couple and deaf bridesmaids, attracted a huge crowd who were packed at the wedding venue to witness the rare ceremony.

The bride and bridegroom’s parents and villagers were able to follow the proceedings of the wedding through an interprter.

The interpreter, identified as Immanuel Muigai, said the couple, William Mwaura and Phyllis Wawira, met in 2016 during a church function. Both of them are members of Deaf Mission Fellowship Church, a church Mr Muigai also belongs to.

“After interacting, the two church members became friends, then became concerned friends and then love birds and that’s how a courtship begun,’ Mr Muigai said.

The two kept their love blossoming through text messages which greatly contributed to their interactions.

They told The Nation, Kenya that they are ready to settle as a husband and wife. Speaking through sign language, Mr Mwaura said:

“When I met my lover one and half years ago, I felt new and something clicked my mind that I had met my helper.”

The groom is a carpenter while the bride runs a beauty salon.

Meanwhile, press play to watch this stunning bride sing a wedding song to her deaf husband in sign language:
