In a straight-set loss to Jule Niemeier at Wimbledon, Britain’s Heather Watson had her chances of making a first Grand Slam quarterfinal dashed.
Watson was defeated 6-2, 6-4 on Centre Court in a match that was preceded by a celebration of the show court’s centennial year.
The second set began with Watson, who has played in every match so far, breaking serve but failing to hold the lead.
German 97 in the world Niemeier, 22, then meets Tatjana Maria, a fellow countrywoman.
In order to defeat Jelena Ostapenko, the 12th seed, Maria saved match points and rallied. 5-7 7-5 7-5.
The British number four said there was always going to be “a bit of drama” as she withstood Kaja Juvan’s late resurgence to secure her breakthrough third-round victory on Friday.
Both of her first two singles matches were played over two days due to late finishes.
