Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu has claimed that current head coach, Jose Peseiro’s contract may not be renewed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Peseiro has come under heavy criticisms despite the team’s qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON).
The NFF announced the appointment of Peseiro as the new coach of the Eagles May 15, 2022, replacing Austin Eguavoen, who returned to his Technical Director role at the federation.
Statistically, Peseiro has lost more games than he has won – 5 losses, 4 wins – and the Eagles are still not playing the beautiful football Nigerians crave for, the same reason his predecessor Rohr was booted out.
However, in a chat with Completesports.com, Shorunmu stated that Peseiro may have done well to qualify the team to the Nations Cup but it appears he may not lead Nigeria to glory despite his repeated boast that he will win the next AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
“There is no doubt that the Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro has done a good job by qualifying the team to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. However, that may not be enough to save his managerial job considering the fact that the team has not been playing impressing football.
“Besides, the game against Sierra Leone also exposed his tactical and technical ability to read the game and to make quality substitution that will have positive effect on the team.
“I have this feelings the NFF may have seen enough of him and may not want to extend his contract.”
