“We gave it all”- Hakimi says following Morocco’s World Cup exit

Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi is proud of his country’s performance at the 2022 World Cup, despite losing to France in the semi-finals.

The Atlas Lions made history by becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals, and while their dream of reaching the final was dashed by holders France, Hakimi believes they will leave with their heads held high.

Achraf Hakimi’s comment

“We gave it all,” Hakimi said via a social media post. “The dream of a team, of a whole country, is over. But we have to be proud of what we have done.”

“We fought until the last second and we leave with our heads held high. We will continue to try and give our all for this nation. Thanks to all Moroccans for your support.”

The tournament’s biggest surprise has been Morocco, who won their group and beat highly anticipated Croatia and Belgium. They then defeated Spain and Portugal in the quarterfinals and round of 16 before being defeated 2-0 by France, who were too strong for Morocco.

With a match against Croatia on Saturday in the third-place playoff, Hakimi and his teammates still have the consolation prize of a bronze medal to play for.
