WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons leave tournament empty-handed, Lose bronze to Zambia

Super Falcons

Super Falcons ended their 2022 Africa Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign on sad note on Friday after they were defeated 1-0 by the Choper Queens of Zambia in the third-place match at Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Southern Africans forced an own goal on Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie to take the lead in the 29th minute.

The Super Falcons were denied an equaliser by the strong Zambian defence despite dominating the both halves of the game.

Falcons came into the game from a penalty shootout defeat to the host nation, Morocco, and were without talisman, Rasheedat Ajibade and midfielder, Ayinde, who were red-carded in their last match.

The 9-time winners were also without captain, Onome Ebi.

Nigeria finished fourth for the first time in the history of the tournament. Zambia on the other hand won their first-ever AWCON Bronze medal.

The Super Falcons shunned training on Wednesday over unpaid allowances and bonuses. The players only resumed training on Thursday, just a day before the crucial match.
