South Africa’s Banyana Banyana advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Burundi 3-1 in their second Group C game on Thursday.
South Africa has now won two games in a row after defeating Nigeria’s champions, the Super Falcons.
Burundi, who had a player sent off with 20 minutes remaining, suffers their second defeat after falling 4-2 to Botswana.
South Africa took the lead in the 20th minute through Thembi Kgatlana, but Burundi equalized 10 minutes later through Aniella Awimana.
South Africa took the lead again in the 32nd minute, this time off the boot of Amogelang Motau.
South Africa had the chance to extend their lead one minute into first-half extra time after being awarded a penalty, but Jermaine Seoposenwe was denied by the Burundi goalkeeper.
South Africa was awarded another penalty in the 53rd minute after Kgatlana was fouled by the Burundi goalkeeper, and Linda Motlhalo converted this time.
Burundi’s hopes of salvaging anything from the game were dashed when Annociate Nshimirimana was sent off.
On Sunday, South Africa will face Botswana, while Burundi will face Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Nigeria and Botswana will square off later on Thursday.
