Liverpool defeated a resilient Ajax team at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, bouncing back from their disastrous loss to SSC Napoli.
The Reds’ Mohammed Salah scored first before Mohammed Kudus’ thunderous strike brought them back. Joel Matip, a defender, came on late to give Jurgen Klopp’s team the crucial three points following a frustrating second half.
After last week’s game’s disappointment, Liverpool came out strong in the first 20 minutes, scoring through Salah to take the lead. The Egyptian superstar sprinted behind Daley Blind before Diogo Jota found him with a skillful pass, and he calmly slid the ball past Remko Pasveer in the Ajax goal.
Nunez had a first-time shot on goal from 15 yards out after a quick interchange with Salah on the edge of the box, but the shot was rather tame and missed Pasveer’s left post. Nunez was back in the thick of the action moments later, this time serving as Diaz’s provider after the latter just missed getting a foot on a low drilled cross along the six-yard box.
In the 89th minute, Joel Matip rose to his highest position to nod in a Tsimikas header and give Liverpool their much-needed victory.
