Lucas Paqueta, a Brazilian midfielder, has officially signed with West Ham from Lyon.
For a significant portion of the transfer window, Paqueta was one of Newcastle’s top targets; however, West Ham’s late interest has caused the 25-year-old to switch clubs and join London Stadium in a deal that is expected to be close to €60 million (£50.9 million).
“I am extremely happy to be here. I hope it’s the beginning of an enjoyable journey. I hope my time here is successful,” Paqueta said
“Last season, West Ham had a very good season and I hope they continue to enjoy more and more good seasons in my time at the club.
“I am excited to pull on the West Ham shirt and show the fans what I can do, to help my teammates and the club.”
Manager David Moyes added: “I’m delighted to welcome Lucas to West Ham.
“He’s a player I’ve admired from afar for a very long time and of course, we saw him close up in our Europa League campaign last season.
“He’s a very talented footballer and whilst he will need time to adapt to the Premier League, we’re excited about adding another proven international to our squad.”
Following a failed €50 million bid last week, West Ham’s attempt to sign Paqueta appeared to have fallen apart almost as quickly as it had begun. The Hammers were considering walking away due to worries that they would not be able to meet Lyon’s demands.
West Ham, however, remained adamant about closing the deal, and after reaching an agreement with Paqueta on a five-year contract, the two sides resumed negotiations. They eventually agreed on a transfer fee of up to €60m plus add-ons.
He joins West Ham as their eighth summer signing with a record of 21 goals and 14 assists in 80 games for Lyon.
