Memphis Depay is still available for transfer, so Manchester United hasn’t completely ruled out making a move for him before it’s too late.
Memphis, who left United in 2017 after a disappointing two-year stint at Old Trafford, is now 28 and would have been close to joining Juventus had he been able to negotiate a free transfer out of current club Barcelona.
Although Barcelona have been looking to offload a number of players to reduce their squad and wage bill, that hasn’t happened.
Currently, Chelsea might purchase Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona, and Memphis could still leave the club. The Gabonese’s exit might make it easier for Depay to get more playing time if he stays with Barcelona.
With the addition of Casemiro from Real Madrid earlier this week, manager Erik ten Hag wanted five players to join the team before September 1 to increase his options for the season. The Brazilian is expected to fill the position in defensive midfield, which has been a trouble spot for United over the years.
In addition to a right back, wide forward, and alternative striker, the club has been considering adding a second central midfielder to its roster. Memphis is one option for the latter position, and United has not yet ruled out making the transfer.
