Manchester United is one of the teams monitoring Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernandez and has scouted him in recent weeks, according to reports.
Fernandez joined Benfica from River Plate in July and has helped his club to an unblemished start in the Portuguese Primeira Liga this season as well as through the group stages of the Champions League.
Benfica has already qualified for the last 16 ahead of Juventus, along with Paris Saint-Germain.
Other Premier League teams interested in Enzo Fernandez
Fernandez, 21, has been tracked by a number of Premier League clubs for months, with United, Manchester City, and Newcastle among those interested before his move to Benfica, though Wolves came the closest to signing him last summer before he chose to move to Portugal.
Wolves agents even travelled to South America to finalize a trade, but Benfica had already agreed to terms. They eventually signed Matheus Nunes from Sporting CP.
United, on the other hand, has continued to study his growth during his stay in Europe and has kept a close eye on him in recent weeks, and they are not alone in their persistent interest.
Man Utd interest, Frenkie de Jong
Erik ten Hag’s side signed Casemiro from Real Madrid in the summer after chasing Frenkie de Jong for months and finally failing to close the deal. United’s interest in the Dutchman persists, but his camp is expected to examine the situation at the end of the season before deciding on next actions.
Man Utd midfield options
United have few options for ball-playing midfielders and rely heavily on Christian Eriksen’s inventiveness from deeper positions, albeit his defensive talents have been called into doubt at times this season.
Other midfield alternatives include Scott McTominay and Fred, both of whom have known limitations, and midfield is an area United are expected to improve in upcoming transfer windows.
