Transfer: I can’t believe they didn’t sign him – Collymore tells Liverpool to buy player overlooked by United
Stan Collymore believes Man United have missed an opportunity for not signing their loanee on permanent basis, asking Liverpool to jump at it
Former Liverpool man Stan Collymore has told Liverpool to make a move for Manchester United loanee Marcel Sabitzer.
The midfielder ended his loan spell at Manchester United last month.
He was loaned from Bayern Munich during the January transfer window to help fill the void left by Christian Eriksen’s injury that ruled him out for three months.
The 28-year-old went on to play 18 games for the Red Devils before a knee injury ended his campaign with five games of the season remaining.
He scored important goals against Fulham in the FA Cup and Sevilla in the Europa League.
United confirmed his departure from the club at the end of June and have shown no indication they are interested in bringing him back for next season.
Bayern are prepared to sell Sabitzer this summer with reports in Germany suggesting he will be available for €15million (£12.8m).
Liverpool are revamping their midfield this summer having already brought in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively.
Collymore is surprised United have not made efforts to make Sabitzer’s stay at Old Trafford permanent and with the midfielder available for a reasonable fee, he has urged Jurgen Klopp to bring him in.
“There have been recent reports that the Bavarians are happy for the Austrian to leave permanently for a fee of just €15m – if that is true, I cannot believe Manchester United haven’t snapped their hand off already,” Collymore told Caught Offside.
“If they’re not going to take Bayern Munich up on it, I wonder if Klopp will think about it.
“He’s proven he can play in the Premier League and that fee is almost too good to turn down, especially when it’s senior international-level midfielders you’re in the market for.”
