South Africa coach, Stuart Baxter has revealed why his side lost to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a quarter final game at the ongoing AFCON 2019 in Egypt.
South Africa which defeated the host nation in the second round lost to Nigeria 2-1. Samuel Chukwueze gave Nigeria fhe lead in the first half which was canceled after by Bongani Zungu who levelled after a VAR decision.
Nigeria restored the lead against after an effort by Williams Troost-Ekong in the second half to secure a Semi-final spot.
Speaking to press after the game, Stuart Baxter congratulated Nigeria saying:
“It’s hard to lose in the dying minutes of a game but I thought we weren’t brave enough in the first half and we didn’t defend well enough.
“We tried to come out in the second half but we left spaces for Nigeria to exploit.
“Congratulations to Gernot Rohr and his team,” Baxter said.
