Sadio Mane of Bayern Munich is expected to miss the World Cup due to an injury suffered in Tuesday’s match against Werder Bremen.
Mane started the game but only lasted 20 minutes before limping off with what appeared to be a minor injury, with Leroy Sane coming off the bench to replace him in the 6-2 win.
Bayern react to Sadio Mane’s injury update
Bayern was confident that Mane’s injury would be minor, with assistant Dino Toppmoller saying immediately after the game: “He got hit in the leg, which caused a little nerve pain. Nothing too serious. His participation in the World Cup shouldn’t be in jeopardy.”
L’Equipe reports that Mane has actually sustained a tendon injury and won’t be ready for the World Cup in time.
Mane is no longer anticipated to make the cut for Senegal manager Aliou Cisse’s World Cup squad, which is a major setback for the African nation.
Mane has made 92 appearances for his nation, scoring 33 goals during that time, and is renowned for leading Senegal to victory at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
