On Wednesday, Argentina’s Lionel Messi missed another penalty kick against Poland in the World Cup 2022.
Messi was fouled in an aerial challenge with Poland goalkeeper Szczesny and was awarded a penalty.
The Argentine legend stepped up to take the kick, but the goalkeeper saved it. Messi is now the first player in World Cup history to save two penalties.
Messi has missed two of his three World Cup penalty kicks (excluding shootouts), tying him for the most missed by a player since at least 1966. (Asamoah Gyan, two missed out of four).
Wojciech Szczesny is only the second goalkeeper in World Cup history (since 1966) to save a penalty after having conceded it himself, following Joel Bats for France against Brazil in 1986.
La Albiceleste will qualify with a win over Poland and will top the group if Saudi Arabia draws or loses to Mexico in the other group game.
